  • Description of Services:

    • Treatment of the temporomandibular joint (TMD)

Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) refers to diseases of the jaw joints and chewing muscles, as well as their causes and consequences. The disorders are primarily expressed by clicking noises in the jaw joint, which usually occur when chewing or opening the mouth wide, such as when yawning. There may also be asymmetrical movements of the lower jaw when chewing. Even more remote parts of the body can either be affected or cause dysfunction.
Patients with “bruxism” (teeth grinding) and “clenching” (permanent clenching of the teeth) often suffer from muscle tension disorders in the head area, which often lead to severe headaches or earaches. Postural disorders of the cervical spine and diseases of the shoulder joint are also often triggers for pain or movement disorders in the jaw joint.
The functional disorders are described as “myogenic” (affecting the muscle), “arthrogenic” (affecting the joint), or “neurogenic” (affecting the nerve pathways).
Postural disorders of the spine are usually accompanied by the head being pushed forward, as is often the case when sitting in an unnatural position at a desk. This creates, usually unnoticed at the beginning, unfavorable pressure-tension conditions for the jaw joint and the muscles involved, which can also lead to the well-known headaches. In the treatment by the physiotherapist, this means that the entire statics of the body are taken into account during therapy and corrected if necessary.
The treatment of these symptoms requires close cooperation between various professional groups, particularly the dentist, who usually comes to the diagnosis of CMD, as well as the physiotherapist who is subsequently involved in the treatment and trained in the field of CMD.

Dental treatment may consist of correcting a misaligned tooth, which may also require orthodontists or surgeons to be involved in the treatment.
Depending on the cause, a splint adjustment can be made, which ultimately aims to reduce pressure in the joint or the muscles involved.

The introduction to physiotherapeutic treatment should always be a massage treatment of the entire chewing, cheek, neck and shoulder muscles combined with thermal application (fango pack, hot roller, hot air, etc.).

Heat and massage reduce muscle tension and reduce pain. Movement-restricted areas of the cervical and thoracic spine are then mobilized using manual therapeutic techniques and muscle stretches.
If this results in an improvement in the patient's symptoms, posture training can then be carried out. Poor posture of the spine can also be considered as the most common factor for CMD.
The patient's sleeping position must also be taken into account: patients whose symptoms worsen in the morning should purchase a special neck pillow from a medical supply store. This relieves the strain on the cervical spine when lying on the back and side.

      Triggering factors may include:

      - the sleeping position (on your stomach)
      - Bruxism (teeth grinding)
      - Teeth clenching
      - Upper respiratory tract disorders, leading to open-mouth breathing
      - To chew bubble gum
      - Smoking a pipe
      - Lip biting

      and still

      - Misaligned teeth
      - gaps in teeth
      - poorly adapted dental fillings and implants
      - Prostheses, crowns, bridges
      - Cervical spine trauma, e.g. B. after rear-end collisions
      - Bad posture of the back and neck.

    • Spinal therapy according to McKenzie

In the 1960s, New Zealand physiotherapist Robin McKenzie developed his own method for examining and treating spinal pain.
The success of the treatment system he developed can be measured by the fact that this concept for treating spinal problems is practiced in North and South America, throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Scandinavia, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
The success of the McKenzie treatment concept has generated great interest among researchers in many parts of the world. It is one of the best-researched systems for diagnosing and treating spinal problems. Several research projects confirm the effectiveness and importance of this system, and the Danish guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of back problems therefore expressly recommend this treatment method.

In our experience, the McKenzie method is ideal for treating slipped and bulging discs.

The McKenzie concept is one of the few scientifically recognized treatment concepts for back pain.

    • Manual orthopedics according to Cyriax

This therapy method, named after the English doctor James Cyriax (1904-1985), deals with the examination and treatment of malfunctions of the musculoskeletal system, mainly so-called soft tissue problems or inflammation of muscles and tendons.
The therapy method has proven effective for inflammation and overload syndromes.

One-sided stress in sport, work and everyday life often results in chronic irritation, especially of the tendon attachments (tennis elbow, Achilles tendon irritation, patellar tendon irritation, etc.). Deep transverse friction is a proven treatment method for this.

What is required is a comprehensive examination scheme that is on a par with imaging procedures for soft tissue problems.

    • Manual lymphatic drainage and complex ents

With the help of the lymphatic vessels, water is removed from the tissue and returned to the blood vessels. If the function of the lymphatic system is disrupted, body water accumulates in the tissue and swelling (edema) occurs. The therapeutic concept of lymphatic drainage aims to restore the disturbed balance between the amount of tissue water and the performance of the lymphatic system. At the same time, the immune system should be stimulated.
Manual lymphatic drainage was developed by the Danish physiotherapist Emil Vodder. Around 50 years ago he worked in Cannes (southern France) in an institute for physical therapy. There he observed that spa patients with chronic colds often had severely swollen lymph nodes on their necks. Contrary to the prevailing wisdom at the time, Vodder massaged a young man's enlarged cervical lymph nodes with careful twisting and pumping movements. The young man got well. From this experience, Vodder developed manual lymphatic drainage.
Lymphatic drainage is particularly suitable for complaints in which there is congestion (edema) of lymph or water in the tissue.

Our practice is a member of the German Network for Lymphology. V. in order to ensure the best possible standard in the treatment of edema patients.
